Day Trip to Hanging Rock State Park

Located in Stokes County 30 miles north of Winston-Salem, Hanging Rock State Park started as a Civilian Conservation Corps project and has become a park that offers every part of a traditional outdoor experience. Trails lead to picturesque mountain views, rock outcrops, waterfalls, and even a mountain cave. Some are open to horseback riding and mountain biking, and a portion is part of the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail. Campgrounds, a swim lake, and access to paddling on the Dan River complete the gamut of recreational opportunities.

We drove to the park from Charlotte and reached there around 11am, it was fairly sunny & very nice weather for taking the trails. We collected the park map from Visitor Center and started our trips. Our plan was to take couple of trails and have picnic with homemade foods.

Hanging Rock Trail - 1.8 Miles One Way

This trail is now rerouted to a longer route which is 1.8 Miles one-way instead of the original route of 1.3 Miles. It's of moderate nature and kids did it with ease and super enthusiasm. They managed to get some branches to make walking sticks. It took over 2 hours for the round trip to complete. But the view of the Hanging Rock was scary & breathtaking.

After 2 hours of walk & sweat we had the best lunch (Burger, Sandwich, Boiled Egg, Tandoori Chicken & Drinks) at the parking area.

Upper Cascade Falls Trail - 0.3 Miles One Way

After the rewarding lunch, we took the Upper Cascade Falls Trail and it was relatively easy and of shorter route. It was less less crowded and took 30 mins to complete the round trip.

Our last stop was Park Lake, we reached there around 3:30pm. It are well organized & have options for swimming and boat riding. Kids spent some time swimming and playing in the water.

The combination of scenic trails and refreshing water activities makes Hanging Rock State Park an ideal destination for family bonding and outdoor fun.
